GENERAL NEWS
Many striking stories or myslcrles have been circulating lately, but the only one with any basis of truth is the case of a young woman named Annie Caldwell Lindsay, who arrived from Dannevirke on July 14 last, and was slaying at the Provincial Hotel until the night of the 2iUh ultimo (says the Hawke's Bay Herald of Saturday). Before retiring the young woman said good night to her fellow boarders and went to her room. The following morning she was missing, her bed had not been slept in, and she has not since been seen or heard of. According to information gathered by the police, the woman is tall and slim, and is between 30 and 35 years of age. On the night of her disappearance she was dressed in a fawn costume with a cream collar. and was wearing black shoes and stockings. She also had a ring, set with a red stone on the left hand. One member or the deputation of returned soldiers which conferred with Ministers on Saturday at Wellington, grew indignant at the manner in which he said a northern firm had sought lo use Anzac Day as a medium with which to push its business. "It is disgusting to read an announcement such as this," said he: "Tins firm will close from J o'clock until 3 in honour of Anzac Hay and our brave soldiers, but before and after that we will cu:itinuc In sell our goods at the lowest possible price for cash.' Anzac Day should be a sacred day in memory of the IG,GOO New Zealanders who gave up their lives in the war. This so.-t of thing (throwing down the paper), "must be stopped."" And all present agreed.
