Chaleil, ex-Prefect of the Seine-et-Oise, who was dismissed owing to his attack on the departing German delegates at Versailles, has been reinstated in view of the finding of the Commission that the incident was due to the Germans. In order to revive British coastwise shipping, also to relieve rail congestion, a conference of the Government and the representatives of the various interests agreed to utilise shipping for traffic, which before the war was ordinarily seaborne. The Government will repay the shippers the difference in fro wbts until the rail rates are raised to the level of the sea freights.
