MINISTERS' SALARIES
AN UNPOPULAR MEASURE. MR BONAB LAW'S DEFENCE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, August 6. Ir the House of Commons, Mr Donald McLean moved the rejection of the U ; ll increasing salaries from £2OOO to £SCOO until the Government produ"'s n polity of all-round economies. Members of all parties denounced ihc increase at a time when the Government was urging the people to economise. Mr Bonar Law admitted that the Bill was unpooular, but it was urgently needed. It was good business to pay to get work well done, and Ministers' s ilaries should be commensurate with their abilities and the importance of their work. He offered to postpone the remaining stages until the autumn if the Bill were read a second time now. The Bill was read a second time by 176 to 83.
