QUESTION OF ALLOCATION
SIR D. MAWSON’S VIEWS. AUSTRALIAN CONTROL FAVOURED. (United Press Association MELBOURNE, April 30. Sir Douglas Mawson has returned from three and a-half years’ work in connection with the Ministry of Munilions. lie says he hoped the Peace Conference would find time to deal definitely with the allocation of Antarctic lands, as he felt that these regions were going to he of very considerable economic value. He thought it might fairly be claimed that the section of the Antarctic between 90 deg. and 180 deg. east should be under the control of Australia. Once whaling and sealing, which were things of the near future, were begun, there would have to be control. There were immense areas of coal-bearing country in the Antarctic, but he did not think they would be developed for a very long time.
