HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEMES
WAIKATO WORK TO PROCEED. IF EXPERIMENTAL TESTS ARE SUCCESSFUL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Thursday. Referring to the hydro-electric schemes, Hon. Sir William Fraser, Minister of Public Works, said the work of sinking an experimental shaft on either side of the Arapuni Gorge in connection with the harnessing of the Waikato river was now in progress. Provided the test proved satisfactory the construction of the dam would be proceeded with. It was estimated that a plant with a capacity of 102,000 horse-power could ultimately he installed at this station. To fulfil its function in the general scheme proposed by Parliament, a plant with a capacity of 96,000 horse-power was required. Work was also progressing in connection with the Mangahac scheme near Palmerston North, which was considered capable of developing 24,000 horse-power and which would be the main North island generating station, • , Sir William Fraser added that there was no intention of proceeding with the Lake Waikaremoana scheme for some time.
