WAIKATO SHIPPING COMPANY
IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENTS. PROBABLE IN THE NEAR FUTURE. Some months ago various settlers along the western coast, from Kawliia to Raglan and further north, made certain overtures to Mr A. L. Stevenson, manager of the Waikato Shipping Company, in connection with the establishment of aservice to meet their requirements. In consequence of the representations made, inquiries were instituted as to the possibility of securing a suitable vessel for the trade, with the satisfactory result that an option has ben secured for the purchase of a boat which should meet the needs of the trade for some time to come, the completion of the scheme is contingent upon the amount of support accorded to the company, and with the view of ascertaining how the settlers interested regard the matter it was arranged that a series of meetings should be held at the various centres along the coast which would be catered for by the service. The first of these meetings was held at Te Uku on Tuesday last. It was well attended, and Messrs Stevenson (manpger), R. English (director). J. Overton and A. Whitehorn were also present. Mr Stevenson addressed the meet'ng, explaining fully the proposed scheme. The proceedings were most enthusiastic, a resolution being unanimously adopted in ' favour of the scheme, and the amount of support promised in the room justifies the company in taking further action. Mr Stevenson has arranged to hold meetings throughout the Raglan and Kawhia i districts during the next few days, and it is predicted that it will not be long ere the proposed service is inaugurated. It will mean a big development in the progress of the river service.
