EGYPTIAN TROUBLES

Mr Cecil Harmsworth stated In flic House of Commons to-day that there was further marked improvement in the Egyptian situation. Cairo and Alexandria were now reunited by railway. SITUATION LESS ANXIOUS. MAINTENANCE OF COMMUNICATIONS. - BY AEROPLANE AND WIRELESS. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received March 25, 7.15 p.m. LONDON, March 24. Lord Curzon, in the House of Lords, said that the situation in Egypt was less anxious. The mobs in Upper Egypt had torn up the railway and the telegraph poles, but communication was being maintained by aeroplanes and wireless. Recent manifestations-were predatory rather than political. A serious feature was the possibility of the Bedouins joining ifhe disturbance, but doubtless General ,AUcnby will soon re-establish order. GOVERNMENT INSTITUTING ENQUIRY. INTO THE ADMINISTRATION. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received March 25, 9.50 p.m. LONDON, March 24. The Government is instituting an inquby in connection with reform in the administration of Egypt. FURTHER TROUBLE FEARED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received March 25, 10.20 p.m. LONDON, March 24. The Daily Express’ Cairo correspondent states that all the railway traffic in Egypt is suspended. On Sunday mobs wrecked many stations and cut the lines, but the troops now hold the principal stations and aeroplanes patrol the tracks, machine-gunning the mobs. The trouble was renewed on Monday, more stations being destroyed. The student-lawyer classes who fomented the trouble now find themselves in the hands of lawless bands of Bedouins and labourers. , Cairo fears fresh outbreaks, but the railways and telegraphs are heavily guarded and the streets are patrolled. The troops are confined to their barracks.
