N.Z. FARMERS’ UNION

MATAMATA BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Matamata branch ot the Farmers’ Union was held on Friday last, Mr H. Rollout presiding. The Police Department acknowledged receipt of the branch’s letter urging the appointment of a resident constable in Matamata, and in reply stated that, owing to the reduction in the strength of the police force, which had taken place during the war, a constable cannot be spared at present, but a hen the shortage has been made up the Department hopes to he in the position to agree to the request. The Acting Prime Minister, writing on hydro-electric matters, said he had conferred with the Hon. Minister for Public Works regarding the Hora Hora works, and he was informed that proposals to purchase would shortly be submitted to Cabinet. The Farmers’ Auctioneering Co. wrote that the question of concreting the saleyards had been receiving attention For some . time, but, unfortunately, the plans had been lost. The company realised the importance of the work, and will endeavour to hurry the matter as quickly as possible. The provincial secretary wrote that a remit was passed at the conference, advocating that the aid of all branches be sought towards bringing pressure to boar on the Government to establish aft Agricultural College at Ruakura. It was decided to write to the Hon. W. H. Herries, M.P., asking him to bring the matter before the Ministers for Agriculture and Education. It was resolved that the branch cooperate with the Town Board in any movement with regard to giving a general welcome to returned soldiers. On Mr Simpson’s motion, if was decided to hold a Farmers’ Union social on a date in May. At the request of the provincial executive, it . was decided to write to the Waikato Co-oncrative Dairy Cn. and the New Zealand Dab'y Assumption, stating that the branch is in favour of the amalgamation of the two companies.
