THE WAIKATO RIVER

♦ IMPROVING THE CHANNEL. VISIT OF MINISTER OF LANDS. Recently Messrs E. F. Frost (director) and A. L. Stevenson (general manager), of :ho 'Waikato Shipping Co., visited Wellington, and waited upon the Minister for Marine (Hon. 1. M. Wilford) in regard to the ini. provement of the channel of the Waikato* River for navigation purposes. It was pointed out that the present was an excellent time for an inspection, as the river was exceptionally low.

Mr Wilford met the deputation very sympathetically, and has evidently been moving in the matter, for to-day Mr Stevenson received the following telegram from him: — “Hon. D. H. Guthrie has informed mo that he is arranging for Air J. B. Thomson, drainage engineer, to accompany him on a visit of inspection to the river, probably within the next ton days.”

The visit of the Minister and engineer will probably do much to speed up the work of improving the channel. The party will most likely commence their visit of insjjeetion from Hamilton.
