OVER THE MAIN TRUNK
INADEQUATE ACCOMMODATION.
(By Telegraph.—Special to Times.) | AUCKLAND, Tuesday. What indignant members declared was a disgraceful state of affairs in respect to the travelling conditions on the Main Trunk express .was ventilated at a special meeting iff the provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union this morning. Mr James Boddic, provincial president of the union, introduced the matter. He said he had travelled so frequently on the express, and had seen first hand the disgraceful conditions under which many of the public were conveyed that it was quite’--time the public should be beard. He instanced several cases, of men and women lying along the corridors of the carriages, with the guards picking their way as best they could over them, while others had to spend half their time on the platforms. He moved the following resolution:—“That the executive of the Farmers’ Union protest most strongly against the continued inadequate accommodation of the Main Trunk express, and would urge that the disgraceful overcrowding, which has existed for months past be at once provided for by the reinstatement of the second express, of pre-war days; or some other satisfactory method, whereby the reasonable requirements of the travelling public will be provided for. Mr A. A. Ross seconded, and very strongly deprecated the conditions, of which he had personal knowledge. The motion was carried unanimously.
