fj FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Hamil-j ton Borough Council took place on ifrl-jjj day. His Worship trie Mayor (Mr'J.'' R. Fow) presided, and there were also present Crs Mason, Tidd, Sncll, Gosling, Laffcrty, Herbert, Fraser Smith, Howden and Young. Jnfluonza Relief Fund. The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce cd support of a resolution urging that local bodies, not the Charitable Aid Board or the Public Health Department, should administer the influenza epidemic relief fund voted by Parliament.—The letter was received. Hydro-Electric Power. 1 The Hamilton Chamberof Commerce 'asked the Council to send a representative to the conference of local bodies "to be held in Hamilton on Wednesday, February 12, to consider the hydroelectric power proposals. The Mayor mentioned that a very enthusiastic meeting of local body representatives had been held on Tuesday. ... Crs Mason, Howden , and Tidd were appointed to represent ttie Council at .the conference. Proposed Right-of-way. Messrs Rogers and Stace, on behalf Of Mrs Dougherty, wrote that the latter could not give an assurance, as requested, that the back section would not be built upon, in connection with her application for a right-of-way. It was not likely that the section' would ever develop into a slum area. A comrn''f?e consisting of the Mayor and Crs Tr*,..ram and Mason was appointed to interview the applicants. Labourers' £-vard. • The secretary of tin? Auckland Provincial Employers' Association notified that a full settlement of the labourers' dispute had been arrived at (particulars of which have already been published). —Received, the supervisor reporting that the increase would be about 5s per week. War Bonus. The Allied Iron Trades notified that they were applying to the Arbitration Court, on February 5, to confirm an agreement increasing the war bonus from 2d to 3d per hour.—Received. Metal Quarries. Several offers of sites for stone quarries were received. Mr Robert Edgar, Te Kuiti,.believed he could secure a good quarry at Te Kuiti. By putting in a crusher an unlimited supply could be secured. He could fill the position of quarry manager. Mr W. MoNeilis, Paeroa, wrote that he had a lot of second-grade stone. He could place the spawls at -is Od per yard. Mr D. Luke, Huntly, notified that there was blue metal available by water on the west side of the river, royalty Gd per yard. Mr W. F. F. Walker, Auckland, wrote that he was agent for the Denver rock drill. The N.Z. Farmers' Fertiliser Company, Ltd., Auckland, asked for earl} information regarding option of metal , The Mayor reported that the committee set up had interviewed Messrs Ellis and Burnand, who had offeret .the use of their siding in the storing o: metal. He had that day wired to tin Fertiliser Company for the Te Papapi me tal. —Action confirmed, Messrs Ellis and Burnand to be thanked for theii generous offer.

Noxious Weeds. Inspector de Silva, traffic inspector, notified that his whole lime was not devoted to noxious weeds, much of it being taken up with traffic supervision; also that as far as the Frankton area to the west of the Main Trunk liue was concerned, it was almost impossible te find on the ground the sections recorded in the Valuation Roll. "Notices to clear" had been sent to every, owner on the roll. The Mayor said the Council would like the inspector ' and solicitor to bring test cases so as to sec where they stood. The Council had no desire to censure its servants, but thought something more must be done. Cr Lafferty moved that the inspector take action against all property-own-ers with sections or road frontage covered by noxious weeds —six to be taken each court day. Cr Fraser Smith seconded, and the motion was carried. The foreman of the Beautifying Society submitted a scheme for beautifying the piece of land opposite the Town Hall. He suggested that the buildings be removed, and a resting place such as that in Garden Place erected, at a cost of between £3O and £4O. The rest of the section could be planted with trees, plants, flowers, etc., and the bank hung witli ice plants. - The Mayor said that the Anglican Church intended to deal with its portion of the section, and there was little more to be dealt with. The report was referred to the Works Committee, the scheme being thought a splendid one. Expenditure on Victoria cireo:. The town clerk reported:—The amount paid out for the nine months ending 31st December is, as indicated by the statements already supplied :.o councillors, £9Ol 9s 6d, and which includes the whole street from the river near the lily pond to the Whitiora culvert, with the following-proviso—-viz., that a portion of the items under heading of tar shed £543 14s 4d, maintenance £l2l 13s sd, and streets undefined £74 3s Id, no doubt has been used on Victoria street,. IL was stated that Victoria street paid one-eleventh of tiic rates of the whole borough. In general rato £4OOO had been collected for the block from the Bank of New Zealand to the Cosy Corner. General. Mr C. L. King drew attention to the slate of an empty section in Kitchener ! street, which was covered witli noxious i weeds and was a clanger.—Referred :o j inspector. , The Electrical Committee -recommended, in connection with the request for electric Ugh I from Mr Gowles and other residents of llardlcy street, that, provided the department could supply the current the applications be granted on condition that, as in other cases where the persons concerned are not on the main lines, all expense from the main at intersection of Victoria ami London streets be borne by the applicants. J. T. White, F. 11. Allison, James Lawless, W. Turner, 11. Kirk, F. C. Siddall, and C. Gibson were granted drivers' licenses. In the rase of two other applications the police report was unfavourable, and they wera declined. Accounts amounting to £7OOI 7s Od were passed for payment. II was resolved, on the recommendation of the Legal and Finance Committee, that at the present time the Council could not entertain the Fire Brigade's proposal for us:ng water from dead ends.

Special ft/looting. At a special meeting of the Council a special order to raise a loan of £2500 for the purpose of (a) extending the electric lighting and power system within that portion of the borough which was formally included in the borough of Prankton, and (b) of paying to the credit of the District Fund £1325 19s 8d in refund of moneys expended by the Frankton Council out of the District Fund for the before-mentioned purposes, the loan to be covered by the levy of a rate of l-5d in the £ in the area specified was confirmed.
