The American Labour Mission, hoaded by Mr Samuel Gompers, president <of the American Federation of Labour., has arrived, and will attend the Labour Union Congress. They will also visit France and Italy to stimulate unity in the war spirit among the workers of the three countries. AMERICAN AIR MINISTER. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received August 30, 9.15 a.m. WASHINGTON, August 29. Mr Baker, Secretary for War, announced that Mr John Ryan has been appointed Assistant Secretary for War, with responsibility for tho Army Air Service, which is practically tantamount to l>eing appointed Air Minister. AUSTRALIAN WHEAT SURPLUS. (United Press Association.) Received August 29, '9.35 p.m. MELBOURNE, August 29. Hon. W. A. Watt conferred with the Wheat Board and urged the necessity for the disposal of the surplus wheat, even at a lower prico than farmers considered reasonable. The present overdraft from the wheat purchase was £14,000,000. Attempts to sell, the two years' surplus were unsuccessful. THE I.W.W. INQUIRY. (United Press Association.) SYDNEY, August 29. The I.W.W. Commission has resumed, being mainly occupied in.the cross-ex-amination of Goldstein respecting tho fire dope and his connection with the I.W.W. case.
