Th« Taranaki Farmers' Meat Company, at the annual meeting on Saturday, declared a dividend of five per cent. Many new shares were taken up with a view of adding further storage. A Press Association cablegram states that Mr James R. Pound, formerly of New Zealand, has been appointed lecturer and demonstrator in chemistry and metallurgy at the Ballarat School of Mines. A mean theft from a second-hand shop in Hamilton occurred the other day. A young man went in with the expressed intention of purchasing a rifle. He examined the gun, but left the shop without purchasing. Later, the owner of the shop discovered that the lock of the rifle had been removed. At the Supreme Court, Auckland, Robert Abercrombie Brown, ex-ac-accountant of the Farmers' Union Trading Company, charged with stealing £350 from his employers, and Louis Aloysius Frost, formerly secretary to J. T. Julian and Co., charged with emblezzing £684 from his employers, were each sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment.

A statement of the Wool Committee on the purchase of Australia's 1917-18 wool clip shows that 616,909,92811) were submitted for appraisement. The Municipal Band played the brigade to and from the church, and at the close of the parade Superintendent Thompson thanked them for their vices. A iinal notification is given in our advertising columns to-day that the supplementary roll, required in connection with an election to be held for the purpose of filling the vacancy on the Borough Council, caused by the appointment of Cr. Fow to the position of Mayor, will close on Wednesday next (21st inst.) at 5 p.m. All claims for enrolment must be delivered at the Town Clerk's office not later than the time and date mentioned, so thai all persons who are not yet enrolled, but who possess the necessary qualifications, should lose no time in making application for enrolment. Application was made to Mr Rawson, S.M. this morning, under the Land Drainage Act, for the revision of the ratepayers' list in connection with the Freshficld, Eureka, Hillside, Woodlands, Ruapoto, and Kirikiriroa Drainage districts (represented by Mr Insoll) and the Te Rapa Drainage District (Mr Swarbrick). There were no objections, and the lists were approved. In the case of the Mangawara Drainage District (Mr Swarbrick) Messrs F. Bradley and McConnell lodged objections to I heir classification, but it was pointed out that the classification was not being dealt with, the Magistrate merely dealing with the ratepayers' list. The list was approved.
