BRITISH BANKING. A BIG AMALGAMATION. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, July 14. The Treasury has sanctioned the amalgamation of the London Joint Stock Bank with the London, City and Mid-, land Bank. The combined deposits total nearly £300,000,000 making it the largest banking institution in Britain.
ARMY CRICKET. ENGLAND v. DOMINIONS. (Reuter's Telegrams.) LONDON, July 14. The return cricket match, England versus the Dominions, was drawn. England, in their first innings, made 157, and the Dominions, playing on a wet wicket, had lost eight wickets for 34 when rain stopped play. THE WIMMERA SURVIVORS. MR SEDGEREER'3 EXPLANATION. (United Press Association.) SYDNEY, July 15. Mr SedgeLcer, referring to the Mayor of Auckland's remarks regarding the treatment of the Wimmera's survivors, explains that he in no way referred to the committee whom the Mayor apparently confuses with the officials, and that any complaints be made related to the shipping officials. He also produced a letter to show that the committee had been reimbursed for anv expenditure made in Auckland on his behalf. WINTER BUTTER RELEASED. (United Press Association.) MELBOURNE July 15. The Government is releasing butter supplies from the winter pool for home consumption AUSTRALIAN WHEAT. FARMERS ASK FOR 5s 9d. (United Press Association.) SYDNEY, July 15. The farmers' conference passed a resolution asking the Government 5s Dd a bushel for the 1917-18 wheat.
