THE NAVAL RAID

AMERICAN NAVAL MEN OVERJOYED. ALLIED INITIATIVE HOPED FOR. [Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received April 25, 9.50 a.m. WASHINGTON, April 2i. Navy men are overjoyed at the Os-tend-Zeebrugge raid, regarding it as indicating the possibility of an Allied naval initiative. WORK SATISFACTORILY ACCOMPLISHED. LESSENED SHIPPING LOSSES EXPECTED. AIRMEN WILL CO-OPERATE. IN HAMPERING RECONSTRUCTION. (The Times.) Received April 25, 10.55 a.m. LONDON. April 24. Seamen engaged state that two destroyers blew up the Zeebrugge duck gates. They saw the water in the Bruges Canal running out and tiie ships in the docks straining at their hawsers. Experts think that the Bruges Canai has been effectively blocked. In the entrance, which is 500 feet wide, two ships of 300 feet each were sunk broadside on, and the sea water will quickly turn the cement into a solid concrete wall, taking skilled underwater workerj with special plants many weeks to remove.

The Times' naval correspondent expects lessened shipping losses from Ostend and Zeebrugge being temporarily sealed up. British airmen will photograph the damage and delay and obstruct repairs by bombing raids.
