BRITISH COUNTER-ATTACKS REGAIN LOST TRENCHES. (High Commissioner's Cable.) Received January 1, 8.35 p.m. LONDON, 2.15 p.in. Monday. Sir Douglas Jlaig reports that on the Cambrai front, as a result of .successful counter-attacks, we regained the more important part of Welsh ridge which the enemy had penetrated yesterday morning, taking prisoners and capturing machine-guns. The enemy still retains a portion of the front trench in the neighbourhood of La Yaequerie, southwards of Marcoing. At Ypres, after a minor operation, \ve advanced slightly astriilf the Ypn's-Stadon railway. Received January 1, 8.35 p.m. LONDON, January i. German official: We took possession of trenches southward of Marcoing and northward of La Vacquerie, but English counter-attacks recovered part of the lost territory. ENEMY ATTACK WITH LIQUID FIRE UNSUCCESSFUL. (Australian and New Zealand and Reuter.) Received January 1, 11.5 p.m. LONDON, January 1. Sir Douglas Haig reports that the enemy this morning renewed the attack on Welsh Ridge on a 1200 yards' front. His troops in the southern portion of the attack, with the. assistance of liquid fire, temporarily entered a trench, but a counter-attack drove them out. The attack on the remainder of our front was broken by fire and completely repulsed.
