German official: We took possession of trenches southward of Marcoing and northward of La Vacquerie, but English counter-attacks recovered part of the lost territory. Sir Douglas Haig reports that the enemy this morning renewed the attack on Welsh Ridge on a 1200 yards' front. His troops in the southern portion of the attack, with the. assistance of liquid fire, temporarily entered a trench, but a counter-attack drove them out. The attack on the remainder of our front was broken by fire and completely repulsed.
