THE ITALIAN FRONT
ENGLAND'S BEST EFFORT WANTED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Asan.) Received Sept. 1, 12.35 p.m. ROME, August 31. The Idea Nazionale suggests that the Italian is the principal, and possibly will be the decisive front, and calls on England to put forth her greatest effort here. CAVALRY IN ACTION. MARCHING ON LAIBACH. POSSIBLE AUSTRIAN EVACUATIONS. TO CONCENTRATE THEIR ARMIESv IN DEFENCE OF LAIBACH. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received Sept. 1, 2.10 p.m. ROME, August 31. The Austrians announce that the Italian cavalry are marching on Laibach. It is believed that this announcement is intended to justify the necessity for the evacuation of Trieste and Carmola, and enable the armies to concentrate in the defence of Laibach. A French military expert writes that if the Italians, after the occupation of Monte Santo and Hermada, follow the road to Trieste or the road Napoleon traced to Vienna, they will strike Austria vitally, and the invasion will quickly result in the renewal of Austrian overtures for a separate peace, not only with Italy but with all the Allies.
