VIOLENT EARTHQUAKE RECORDED. (United Press Association.) Received August 31, 10.15 p.m. SYDNEY, August 31. • The Rivervievv Observatory recorded an extremely violent earthquake in the vicinity of the Aru islands, in the Dutch East Indies, lying west of .New Guinea. DOUBLE TAXATION QUESTION. Received August 31, 10.13 p.m. MELBOURNE, August 31. The House of Representatives lengthily debated the double taxation question. The Government promised to consider the proposal to adopt the New Zealand plan, whereby the highest of the two taxes levied in regard to income earned by a British investor should be equally divided between the two countries.
