LIFE OF PARLIAMENT
PROSPECTS OF A GENERAL ELECTION. MR MASSETS VIEWS. NO OBSTACLES IP IT IS WANTED. (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Mr G. Witty (Riccarton) got leave to-day to introduce his Parliamentary Election Postponement Amendment Bill, which proposes to repeal the Act of last year postponing the general election till the end of 1918. The member, in moving to introduce the Bill, said that there were many reasons why the general elections should be held at the due date this year. Ministers and members had no right to extend their terms of office, and no reason for assuming that the country was satisfied with them.
' The debate that followed was made interesting by some remarks from Mr Massey, who said bluntly to Mr Witty: "Don't be too sure you are not going to get an election. lam not going to stand in the way of a general election. There are members demanding an election, who would be very sad if they get it. If a sufficient number of members of this House require an election they have only to'say so and they will get it. If a sufficient number of people' of the country require an election they have only to say so and they will get It. lam preparing for an election in case it is required."
