JAPAN AND AMERICA AT VARIANCE
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Aasn.) WASHINGTON, June 17.
Much interest is being taken in the Japanese Note to America, stating that she did not endorse America's Note to China wherein America appealed for the adjustment of internal differences. Japan declines to take similar action.
The officials believe that Japan's attitude is based on her claim to a paramount interest in China—but the Note does not mention this.
Britain's reply is similar to the Japanese.
NORTH-EAST PASSAGE
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) SAN FRANCISCO, June 17. Stefansson will shortly attempt to make the north-east passage from the Pacific to the Atlantic. EXTENSIVE FLOODS. xMELBOURNE, July 18. From Echuca to Albury, a distance of 300 miles, the land is a vast lake 15 to 20 miles wide. The Murray and Goulburn rivers are still rising. The towns of Shepparton and Seymour are badly damaged.
