THE LATEST RAID
TWO KILLED—I 6 INJURED. NO MATERIAL DAMAGE. {Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, 5.10 p.m. Sunday. The Zeppelin raid was carried out by two airships. One crossed the Kentish coast, dropping six bombs on a coast town, killing two and injuring 16 persons. The second attacked an East Anglian coast town about 2.30 a.m. It was heavily shelled by the anti-aircraft defences and driven off, probably having been damaged by the gunfire. Shortly afterwards the raider was engaged and brought down flaming by a pilot of the Royal Flying Corps, and was destroyed. There were no casualties or damage in the last raid. -^ 80ME MIRACULOUS ESCAPES. STREETS A MASS OF WRECKAGE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received June 18, 12.10 p.m. LONDON, June 17. The streets in one of the South-east Coast towns are a mass of broken glass. Aerial torpedoes were the principal missiles employed. Some residences were damaged, the occupants having miraculous escapes. FURTHER PARTICULARS. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received June 18, 1.30 p.m. LONDON, June 17. A report from the East Coast towns state that, following a thunderstorm, the night was still and clear. Thousands were aroused from their sleep by a terrific bombardment. Searchlights picked up the raider, which penetrated a few miles inland. The antiaircraft guns gave it a hot reception. The airship was soon aflame, and descended some distance away amid tremendous cheering. The first explosion in the South-east Coast town was about 2 a.m., aerial torpedoes and explosive and incendiary bombs being dropped. The fires were quickly extinguished.
