STEAMER ON FIRE
UNION S.S. CO.'S VESSEL ABANDONED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. AUCKLAND, Monday. The Union Steamship Company's Waitotara has been abandoned by the crew afire, She is loaded with a cargo from the Pacific Coast of America. Relief steamers are being sent. DUNEDIN, Monday. Regarding the lost Waitotara, th* captain decided to abandon the steamer when al)out 200 miles from land, owing to a fire in her cargo of copra and oils, representing a value of ovei £250,000. The crew number 40. lb is understood that the boats are well provisioned, and a relief steamer is hastening to the vicinity from the neanrt port. Later. It is anticipated that if the wind and weather are reasonably favourable the crew will be able to make land in two or three days.
