RACING IN WAR TIME. VICTORIA'S DECISION. (United Press Association.) MELBOURNE, May 17. The State Cabinet discussed the question of the reduction of racing-, but decided to leave it on its present basis. QUEENSLAND UPPER HOUSE. BRISBANE, May 17. Following the defeat of the proposal to abolish the Upper House, the Government is appointing a number of Labourites to the Legislative Council. THE MICE PLAGUE. 16 TONS CAUGHT IN A MONTH. MELBOURNE, May 17. As showing the magnitude of the mice plague in the wheat districts, 16 tons of mice were caught at Minyip, 200 miles out of Melbourne, in the last month, 16£ewt being taken in one night alone. N.S.W. POPULATION. SYDNEY, May 17. The State population totals 1,846,736, a decrease of 21,90S compared with the previous year. INCREASING INCOMES. SYDNEY, May 17. This year's income-tax returns disclose that since 1896 the proportion of payers of this tax has risen from one to three per 100 of population, though in the meantime the exemption has been raised from £2OO to £250. NEW OPAL FIELD. MELBOURNE, March 17. An extensive opal field has been discovered 120 miles north of Tarcoola.
