Further contributions to the Y.M.C.A Trench Comforts' Fund, bringing the total to £458 19s, are acknowledged on page one.

A patient from the Tokanui Mental Hospital, named Augustus Bisson, who was admitted to the Waikato Hospital four days ago, died yesterday morning from penumonia. The promotion of Cjlonel H. Hart. D.5.0., of the Wellington Infantry, to be brigadier-general in command -jf a brigade, is announced. BrigadierGeneral Hart left New Zealand with the Main Body. A new condition was imposed by the Miiitarv Service Board at Palmerßton on Wednesday, in regard to the exemption of. a settler. The condition was: That he remains in his present occupation and raises such crops as may be required by the Minister for Agriculture."

Mr E. J. Wilkinson, Mayor-elect of Cambridge, was duly installed on Wednesday morning bv the Mayor (Mr M. Wells). Mr C. H. Priestly was uppointed chairman of the Works v-oinm'.t----tee, and the Mayor (Mr E. J. Wukinson), chairman of the Finance Committee.

Further trouble is being experienced in the coalmines on the West Coast. At 'Pupooga, the men threaten to strike, unless a, certain man, who has not been in the company's employ for some time, is given work. There* are rumours of similar trouble in another mine, and a disturbance is not regarded as improbable.

Exceptionally "interesting phases of the war are depicted in this week's issue of the Sporting and Dramatic Review, including photos indicating America's naval power, and . life as it exists in the trenches. The fourth of the bicycle road races arranged by Mr W. Slade Clark, was run at Cambridge yesterday, over a course, and resulted in a very close finish. There were seven competitors, viz., Messrs C. Speaking at a send-off to a draft of recruits at Grevmouth on Wednesday, the Mayor, Mr Lynch, referred to what the people at home could do, and said they could make certain that the navy was provided with coal—the very best in the country. They were not going to see the mines tied up. There were men in the mines who were thoroughly loyal. Only a few discontented people were causing all the trouble. The victory over these people at the municipal elections showed that tlie people were determined that the mines should be worked. The statement was greeted with loud applause. A Ngahinepouri-Tuhikaramea cirui. pondent writes:—"The attendance at the meeting of householders, no doubt iike a good many more places, was very limited, and it does not show up the general householder to advantage in ihat he neg!e;ts to show his interest in the wellafte of his children. The first meting of creditors in the state of James Henry Mackie, accountant, of Hamilton, who has been adjudicated bankrupt was held at the official assignee's office, Auckland, yeserday afternoon. The bankrupt's schedule showed liabilities to unsecured creditors, £745, and to secured creditors £'ll9 4s od. The amount of securities totalled £IOO. The assets totalled £IW,-made up of office furniture £25, j and book debts £IOO, estimated to proflu e £75, thus leaving an apparent deficiency of £664 4s sd. The examination of bankrupt showed that he had been in difficulties for about 10 years. Tlie meeting resolved that the assignee be requested to investigate the affairs of the bankrupt, and to report to a subsequent meeting of creditors.
