DISTRICT NEWS
WHATAWHATA. Tennis Match. On Saturday a team of eight players from St. Andrew's Tennis Club played a return match against the local team at Whatavvhata. A very enjoyable afternoon was spent, the weather being fine, and the courts in good condition. Several of the, sets were very evenly contested. The result was a victory for the local team. Ample refreshments were provided by the lady members. Personal. Mr A. Ferguson, junr., is leaving the district in a day or two, having purchased a farm in the Whangarei district. Farming Matters. Feed is at present very abundant and stock of all kinds are in excellent condition. Considerable numbers of cattle and sheep from the back country have passed through here lately on their way to Horotiu work' 6. The recent warm rain was welcomed by those who had lately sown grass-seed. Deviation Road. The metalling of the Deviation road is still proceeding, and good progress is being made with this important work.
PIRONGIA.
Valedictory Social. On Friday evening a large and representative gathering took place for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mrs Sullivan, our courteous and obliging postmistress, who has been promoted to Karangahake. During the evening a enjoyable and musical programme was rendered, and was much appreciated. Those contributing were Mesdames McCarthy (pianist), Vogt, Bell, Miss Sterritt, Messrs Parsons, Godfrey and Young. Mr Young, M.P., in an eulogistic speech, presented Mrs Sullivan, on behalf of the Pirongia inhabitants with a handsome silver tea and coffee service, with hot water kettle, together with silver-mounted oak tray. On behalf of Mrs Sullivan, Mr Chappell returned thanks. Rev. Father Lynch, in his usual happy style, also spoke a feuwords. Mr Stewart, Postmaster, of Te Awamutu, also added his quota. There were many visitors from the surrounding districts, including Mesdames Stewart, Vernon, Vogt and James. The dance music was contributed by Mesdames McCarthy, Bell, Vogt, rnd Miss Peat. "Auld Lang Syne" and "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow" vue sung with great gusto, and brought a most successful evening to a close. Mr Kelso Peat executed the onerous duiies of M.C. in a most satisfactory manner.
