IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS

WAIKATO IN THE 70's. (Clipped and Compiled from Our Back Files.) WEEK ENDING 10th MARCH, 1877 Bank —Tenders w< re called for the erection of a building in brick for the Bank of New Zealand at Hamilton. Raglan-Waipa Road— Considerable satisfaction was expressed that the Government had, after much agitation on the part of those interested, decided to at once lay out the line for the Rag-lan-Waipa road. Railway— The authorities had decidto make Te Awamutu a railway terminus, and an agitation was got up to have the line taken right into the township. Plans were also being prepared for the eretion of a railway bridge at Hamilton at an estimated cost of £BOOO.

Police —There was reported to be considerable disaffection in the Police Force, and the men were holding meetings to consider whether they would remain in the force. They had apparently little confidence in the inspectors. A proposal was being considered to amalgamate the Armed Constabulary and the Police Force, by which it was hoped, while not impairing the efficiencv, to effect a saving of £30,000. A Knowing Cow— lt was reported that a cow had developed an unusual characteristic. She was owned by a Mrs Oldfield, of Waiuku, and would allow no one else to milk her. This frequently caused inconvenience, but the climax came when Mrs 'Oldnolfl was taken ill and was unable to - : about. Various devices * „ed. The services of anoth"- ' V were invoked, who dressed in Sirs Oldfield's clothes and thus 'endeavoured to mislead the animal . It, however, proved futile, and there was nothing for it but to take the cow into the house, where she was duly milked by the only hand she would allow to do it.
