HAMILTON HIGH SCHOOL
BOARD OF GOVERNORS. The annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the Hamilton High School was held yesterday. Present: Messrs •l. Edgecumbe (chairman), Bond, Edis, MacDiarmid, Parr, and Tidd. Apologies were received from Messrs Auld and Young. The Chairman welcomed Mr Parr to a seat mi the Board. The secretary reported that the Governor had re-appointed Mr .1. S. Bond as a member of the Board: the Education Board had appointed Mr B. Parr, vice Mr 0. .1. W. Barton .retired), and Mr Young had been returned unopposed as the representative of the parents. The Chairman submitted bis annual report, in which he congratulated the Board and district on the extremely satisfactory results of the year's working. The average attendance, for last year was 210, and over 113 new pupils have been enrolled this year, the present roll being 252, which must be taken as an indication of confidence and appreciation in the policy of the Board and curriculum of the school. The pupils bad been most successful in the public examinations, the. thanks of all being due lo the principal and his staff for the splendid results which had been achieved, despite, several set-backs. Misses Harrington and Harrison and Mr McGregor had joined the staff during the year, Messrs Gudex and Jacobsen have resigned, while Miss Collins, who has been on the staff for nine, years, has been granted leave of absence for 12 months. Mr Inder and Miss Lynch have joined the staff this year, and the Board, in view of the increased attendance, would be obliged to secure another teacher. Two or three extra class-rooms were necessary. The question of bostelries and formation of playing fields had had to be postponed owing to the war, but it was hoped to proceed with these necessary works as soon as money is available. Messrs Barton, Bond and Young retired from the Board as provided by the new scheme of control, and Messrs Bond, B. Parr and Young had been appointed for a term of three years.—The report was received.
The.statement of accounts showed: —lncome: Fees £l'97 15s M, tectinical class fees £lO, capitation £2Bll ss; technical £152 9s fid, secondary school reserves £215 5s 4d, rents £4O 16s: total, £3 527 lis fid. The principal items of expenditure were: iSalaries £2531 12s fid, office salaries and expenses £lll Is 7ti, technical school expenses £173 5s lOd, upkeep of grounds £SB 17s 7d, transferred to capital account £l9B 7s 7d.
The Principal reported that the school now ranked amongst the largest secondary schools in the nonunion, as according to the latest return there were only seven such schools with an average attendance of 245 or over. To comply with the regulations four additional class-rooms are necessary. He suggested that the woodwork classes should during the present year be located ?n the town, as this would enable the woodwork . room and the boys' shelter room to be converted into three fair-sized class rooms. The Principal also suiifiested that an assistant master he advertised for at a salary of £3OO per annum. If the attendance remained at 250 it would he necessary to make two appointments.—The. report was adopted, and it was decided to—(i) Apply to the Department for a grant for four additional class-rooms:
'2) advertise for- two teachers; (3) i»e.t up a committee (Messrs Bond, Kdgecumbe and MacDiarmid) to find ;i suitable place for the woodwork classes; also to sinvite Mr Kalaugher lo arrange to meet the committee re this matter. —A special vote of thanks was passed to the Principal and staff. Mr (ieorge Kdgecumbe was unanimously re-elected chairman for the ensuing year. Messrs Kdgecumbe, Ellis, Tidd ami Voting were appointed to report as to lite salaries of the staff for the coming year. The meetings of the Hoard were fixed for tin' first Friday in each month at 3 ii.ni. ORDINARY MEETING. An ordinary meeting was then held. Dn the suggestion of the Principal il was decided to approach the Railway Department asking that when the new timetable is being considered the convenient f the children atlendinj: the school from outside districts hj« borne in mind.
