HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The usual meeting of the above was held last night. Present: His Worship the .Mayor ,Mr .1. H. Vow), and Crs. Booth, Howden, Mason, McKinnon, Tidd and Tristram. The Hamilton High School was granted free use of the baths on the 7th and Oth for holding the annual swimming sports. An offer was accepted from Mr John Gordon to provide the necessary timber for the steps on hill in Dawson street. Messrs Swarbrick and Swarbrick forwarded contracts for signature in connection with the formation of Palmerston and other streets.—The documents were duly executed. An offer from Mr John Babington for the lease, .of the Town Hall was referred to tiie Hall Committee, with power to "act. The Claudelands Lancers, Silver Bullet Cannonade, were granted a rebate on the rent of the Town Hall. Several applications for permission ,to join up with the drains were granted. The St. John Ambulance Association and the Military Service Appeal Board were granted the use of the Borough Chambers on specified days, provided they are not required for municipal purposes. An application from Mr W. Grau for electric light for Almadale was "received." the Council not being able to grant the request. The following matters were referred to the Works Committee:—Complaint re telegraph post on Claudelands footway; Mr E. J. Petersen, offer to supply river shingle; Mr Sawte, request for drainage; and Mr Messana, work on Rostrevor street. A number of applications for assistance to connect with the sewer were referred to the Legal and Finance Committee. Plans and proposals submitted on behalf of Messrs- House and Daking for enlargement to their premises in Victoria street were approved. A request from Mr E. Goodwin to have certain frontages cleared was deferred pending a test case to be heard on Monday week. The chairman of the Works Committee was authorised to obtain a price for the removal of trees in Vialou street preparatory to the street being formed. ,
It was decided to replace the Clyde street bridge with concrete pipes. A committee comprising the Mayor and the chairmen of the Works and Gasworks Committees was appointed to confer with a similar committee from the Frankton Borough re the maintenance of works during the transition period, and a combined meeting of the two Councils will be held on Thursday next to compile the district electors' list.
The Cemetery Committee reported as to the condition of the cemeteries, and it was decided to ask the sexton for certain information. The executive for technical education asked for a lease of the site on the school hill upon which it had originally been agreed to erect the fire brigade station. The executive hoped to ihduce the Governmnet to erect a technical school building, and they had fixed upon the site mentioned as the most suitable for the purpose. The Councillors generally recognised the desirability of the site; but as a difficulty had cropped up when it was proposed to lease it to the Fire Board, and Councillors did not know the exact position, it was decided to get the information from the borough solicitors.
The engineer was instructed to report as to the supply of water to Warrville residents.
Mr J. A. de Silva applied for his temporary appointment as traffic inspector to be made permanent.—Appointed sine die. The Gasworks Committee recommended—(l) That the engineer be authorised to make inquiries re installation of a carburetted water gas plant; (2) that the erection of further street lamps be deferred; ami (3) that further inquiries be made re Mr Conradi's application for an extension of mains.— Adopted.
