LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Always to give praise moderately is a strong proof of mediocrity. The Hamilton Ladies' Patriotic comn ittee acknowledge receipt of a donation of 10s from Mr Johnson.

His Honor, Mr Justice Cooper, intiated that he intended to make strong representations to the Minister of Justice in the matter of overcrowding at the Hamilton police cells.

The Hamilton Town Band (under Bandmaster Salter) will give the eighth of the series of Municipal concerts in the Rotunda at Ferry Bank, at eight o'clock to-morrow evening. The programme has been carefully selected, and the public may lock forward to a musical treat. On the motion of Mr C. L. MacDiarmid probate has been granted by the Sup-erne Court to the executrix named in the will of the late Joseph Flemiug Keith Hunter, and also to the executors named in the will of the late James May Jones.

The Hamilton Town Clerk reported last night that tlie Frankton area now received water from the Hamilton supply, and that one of the electrically driven pumps had been temporarily fixed at the power-house. Mr Gunson, who visited Hamilton, Te Awamutu and Cambridge yesterday, stated that as soon as the machinery under the National Efficiency Board was all set up it was proposed to have a conference of all the trustee boards to discuss matters generally. It was likely that the National Board would visit the Waikato and investigate several problems on the spot. It is understood that the National Efficiency Board will co-ordinate its work in such a way that there will be complete co-operation between the district trustees and the Military Service Appeals Boards in the matter of investigating and adjudicating on appeals of reservists with a view to taking adequate steps to ascure that the output of produce from farms will not be materially reduced.

The Hamilton Town Band (Bandmaster Salter) held a very successful concert at Ferry Bank last evening, in aid of the Whitiora Guards' Silver Bullet Cannonade. There was a very fair attendance. All the itejns were thoroughly appreciated, especially a most finished rendition of "Abide With Me." This item showed that the Band has made great strides recently, under the able leadership of BandmasteV Salter. A collision occurred between two motor cars at the corner of Shakespeare and Cook Streets, Leamington, early on Wednesday evening. Mr W. Levatt was returning to the Cambridge show-grounds after having set down his passenger in Wordsworth Street, and as he approached the corner was met by a Dodge car containing five ladies arid a gentlman, going to Te Awamutu. The cars collided almost end on, and both were seriously damaged, although, fortunately, no one was injured. During the hearing of an action in the Supreme Court at; Palmerston, in which bookkeeers and bookkeeping played a considerable part, a witness who was Deputy Official Assignee in a neighbouring town, said a set of books had been sent to him for examination. In all his experience, witness said, he had never seen anything like them. They were the most disgraceful he had seen in his life. Pages were missing from some of the hooks, and their state was such that a new set had to be prepared. Moreover, the original set were tumbled into his office 'like a bundle of rubbish."

In accordance with notice of motion, Cr. Tristram moved at last night's meeting ef the Hamilton Borough Council: "That the by-law fixing the fares to lie charged on certain days to arid from the Waikato A. and P. Association's grounds at Clandelands, to be an amount not exceeding 2s for each passenger, be rescinded, with a view to limiting the fj.fc to Is." Cr. Tristram said that at Taumarunui, where the distance to the course from the town was- four miles, the fare was 2s, while at Te Aroha passengers were conve; !to the races for Is. He considered it was the duty of the Council : .o prevent the fleecing of visitors, and the faro wr- ext ortioiiite. For the orchestra at the forthcoming Imperial Reveille, under tho. auspices oi the Silver Bullet Cannonade, the services of Mr A. Measure have been secured. Mr Measure has had considerable experience in several of the leading West End Theatres, London, and his performances on the side drum should materially enhance the effectiveness of the orchestra, which will he under the direction of Mr J. H. Gittos, the leader being Mr R. Mcintosh. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr E. Rauson, S.M., a man named Frank Harrison, alias Donnelly, was charged with drunkenness, usiii<r obscene language, and with being found by night in a bedroom at the Hamilton Hotel without lawful excuse.
