OPERATIONS IN THE NEAR EAST
| GERMAN ADVANCE CONTINUES. RUSSIANS DRIVEN BACK AT KIRLIBABA. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, January 6. A German communique states: "We have captured Braila. Our advance guards have readied tbe river Scretb and arc bombarding Galatz. The Dobrudja is now clear of tbe enemy." Another German communique stab's: "We defeated and drove back Russian battalions mirth-east, of Kirlibaba. General Mackensen stormed strong positions from Traian to Rimnicu Parat, captured villages, and advanced towards the Sereth. Further to the suulh-east we captured the villages of Olaneastra, Zulianca, and Maxhneri." RUSSIANS FORCED TO RE-CROSS THE DANUBE. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, January 6. A Russian communique states: "We bayoneted many Austrians and captured the remainder of a reconnoitring party northward of Zolotvin, on the Transylvanian frontier. We repulsed live strong enemy attacks on the heights southward of tbe Chebonica river/ We repelled three attacks northward of the Oitoz river. Three divisions, supported by 30 batteries, attacked and pressed us back southward of the mouth of the Buzeu river. The enemy launched fierce attacks at Yokoroni, eastward of Braila. A stubborn battle lasted all day. After suffering groat losses the enemy in the evening compelled us to withdraw to the other bank of the Danube." A German communique stales: •'The Russians attacked and penetrated positions in the regions between the coast at Mitau and the Riga high road. We are making counter-attacks." v » ... :jj£
