BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY

WORK OF THE MONTH. DONATIONS OF PLANTS. A meeting of the Hamilton Beautifying Society was held last night. Mr W. H. Worsley presided. There were also present: Messrs MeCrca, Going, Auld, R. Parr, F. Innes, Home, Paul, and Mitchell (foreman). At the invitation ox ihc Society, Mr G. Parr was also present, as one of the committee set up to assist in the Boxing Day carnival. According to Foreman Mitchell, grass cutting was the principal work during November, and as a result of the mowing, there were between four and live tons of jrood hay which could he sold and would well repay the cost of cutting. The work of cleaning up the river j.ath was in hand, where over one hundred bon fire salvias had been put in. He would like, to plant a border of those along the station entrance. Donations of plants had been received from Mrs Wallace (Tamahere), Sanders and Williams, Mr Best, and Mr Bateman. Mr Mitchell said he could do with a lot more annuals and other plants for beautifying work.

DISFIGUREMENT TO STATION BED The foreman commented that a door had been opened in the wall backing up the flower bed along the station entrance. Mr Worsley named a certain individual as the culprit. The speaker had had a conversation with the man on the matter, who stated that he had applied to the Railway Department for permission for an entrance to his property from the railway side, but this had not been granted, though an opening had been made nevertheless. He understood that an offer would be made to the Society, but this had not come forward. The Society had, of course, a lease of this piece of land, and unless the lease was cancelled no right of entrance could be given over the flower bed. * Mr Auld said he would strenuously oppose any right of entry being granted to anybody over the flower bed, no matter what offer was made. HORSE MOWER. Mr Worsley mentioned that he had given permission to the borough foreman to use the Society's horse mower for a few days. He had mentioned the I matter to the town clerk, and suggested I that as the Council had a lot of mowing to do they might purchase the machine. The two bodies should work hand in hand as much as possible. Mr Auld said he did not object to the Society lending its mower to the Council, but he thought there was room for complaint in the way it was hurried over rough streets, where it might be irreparably damaged . Mr Going did not approve of offering the machine for sale, as, if damaged by borough workmen it would be of little use for the Society's work, and another would-have to be purchased. Mr Worsley said the Society had much to thank the Council for, and it would have been a very ungracious act not to have, granted free use of the machine to the borough workmen. It could not, of course, be allowed to become a regular practice, and 'he Society must decide either to sell" the machine and arrange to borrow it irom the Council or refuse to allow it to be used by any but the Society's workmen. It was decided to retain the machin.? to the Society's exclusive use. The Railway Department is to bo asked to instal water at the grass pljt along the railway station entrance.
