ARTILLERY BATTLES IN PROGRESS GERMANS REPELLED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received Sept. 1, 10.53 a.m. LONDON, August 31. A German communique reports artil-i lerv battles west of Riga and at the: Dunaberg bridgehead in the Stokhod: salient south-east of Kovel. We re-: pulsed counter-attacks at Kukul. A Russian communique states that we repelled attacks on the west bank of the Stokhod, 34 miles north-east of Kovel, with heavy enemy losses. IN ARMENIA. RUSSIAN ADVANCE CONTINUED. 'Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) 1 LONDON, August 31. A Russian communique states that we repulsed Turkish attacks to the westward of Guimishan. The enemy left many dead. Our advance continues in the direction of Diar Bekr.
