The Bitish official report says that south of Thiepval we gained a further 200 yards of German trenches, straightened our line, and improved our position. The enemy's artillery lias been silenced in three different aroas by our heavy guns. On Tuesday evening the enemy's aircraft won: satisfactorily engaged in large numbers. Four were destroyed and many others brought down or pursued to aerodromes. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, August 23. A German communique slates:—"English attacks were vainly repeated at Thiepval and at Pozieres, north of Ovillers, at High Wood and at Maurepas. We ejected the French from a portion of a trench they occupied on Monday at Estrees, and repulsed an attack mi Floury, nortli of Verdun. LONDON, August 21. Tin; Paris correspondent of Hie Daily Mail writes: "There has been three days' desperate lighting in the northern part of Guilleinont. The enemyis defending the position with the courage of despair, hut our men are attacking with invincible obstinacy, and have gained ground. A communique slates that as the result of a brilliant attack on positions between Floury and Thiaumont, we made material progress.
