PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL

The uusal monthly meeting of the Fiako County Council was held in the I Council Chambers, Te Aroha, on Wednesday. Present:-Crs J. B. Thomas, chairman, J. Brady, A. Orr, F. W. Walters. C, Smith and F. Eastwood. PUBLIC WORKS. i The Public Works Department informed the council that a sum of £773 10s was placed to its credit for the following works:—Te Aroha te Gordon. £ for £, £212 10s; Baker's .road, £SO; McLaren's. road, £25; , Piakonui stream bridge, £800; road, £500; Kiwitahi atation road, £100; far No. 1 road. Waitoa, £SOO, £ for £, £IOO was authorised. STATE ADVANCES OFFICE.

The State Advances Office revived to entertain the council's application for a loan of £350 for the purpose <-f forming and grading "No. 4 road, Waitoa, from No. 8 road westwards to the Waihsrakeke stream. HERRIESVILLE SIDING.

The Minister of Railways replied to the council's request to consign metal to Herriesville siding. As the siding in question is not a public one. and provided accommodation for show or race traffic or.ly, he therefore regretted that »he request could not be acceded to.—Received. * TELEPHONE EXTENSION. The Manawatu County Council asked the council's co-operation in urging the Telegraph Department to get the telephone regulations amended so as to allow exchanges, where there are over 30 subscribers, to be opened between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.—The council decided to support the application. WAIKATO KOAD DISTRICT.

The Waipa Council urged the petitioning of the Miniiter of .Public Works, requesting that the status of the Waikato Road District should be raised from its present position of a ■ub-district and separated from the Auckland distiict entirely; or failing this, the business of the Hamilton office be re-arranged in such a way that plan", etc., for public works in connection with the Government grants and subsidies up to. say, ±'soo or over, on any one work, may be approved and the work passed without the vexatious delay caused through reference to the Auckland office.— Cr Walters moved, and Cr Orr seconded, that the recommendation be supported.—Agreed to. SLAUGHTERING LICENSES. Tbe Te Aroha Bacon Co., Ltd., E. Rowe, Moran Bros., Geo. E. White, F. Marshall and J. H. Jellyman were granted renewals of their slaughtering licenses. NO. 8 ROAD CONTRACT. Mr W. R. Johnson, engineer of the Waitoa Drainage Board, informed the council that it was decided to suspend work on the above named contract for the present. A GENEROUS OFFER.

Mr W. Manhire. Waitoa, stated that if the council is unable to borrow £350 from the Advances Office for the No. 4 road work, he would advance same. LOAN FOR NEW ROAD.

Mr F. W. Seifert, Tauhei, wrote stating that as several settlers are arranging to have a new road put in from Tauhei in the Morrinsville road, and agreeing to pay for same by a loan raised over a special rating area. It is desired that the council raise a loan for the work. A deputation consisting of Messrs Seifert and Mellsop waited upon the council in regard to this matter, and asked the council's support in raising the loan. It would mean no expenditure of money on the part of the council; they were simply asked to put the machinery in motion. The road would shorten the distance to Morrinsville by about two miles, and benefit tbe whole district. Later they hoped to get a loan from the Government for the work. The council decided to suppoit the settlers and take steps to rase the loan. PAYMENT WANTED.

Lockyer and Bowd'tch applied for payment ot work on Alexandria road, on account of the contract being altered and the work having been stopped on account of vet weather.— On the motion ot Cr Eastwood, it was decided that the payment be made, only the deposits being retained. CLEARING DRAINS.

Mr A. C. Mulcock, of Waihou, offered to clear and widen a drain which passes through his farm and empties into the Waiwhero stream, at 3s per chain. The offer is to be accepted, subject to the engineer's approval. The Te Aroha Dairy Company asked that a drain be cleared out.—Agreed to.

Mr J. Jackson, Te Aroha West, asked the council to clear out a drain running through his property. TAKING OVER A ROAD.

Mr W. R. McLeod forwarded a plan of hia property, which had been subdivided at Waitoa. He asked the council to take over a road, and on 'what terms.—Left to the engineer to make inquiries. BLOCKED DRAIN.

Mr J. Hanks wrote stating that the drain in front of his property is blocked, and that the water is backing on to his property and doing damage.—Left in the hands of the engineer, with power to act. ENGINEER'S REPORT.

The engineer, Mr D. W. McArthur, reported as follows: Manawaru creamery. —As the approaches to this are bad, 1 would recommend thst if the creamery supplies the pipes the county put them in, with a few loads of sand. ■ Houghton's road.—l ■ find that to make this road fit for traffic as far as Mr Houghton's will cost .at least £l5O for bridge and formation. Herriesville Station.—The Railway Department has been aßked several times by the council to allow them to have metal for Te Kawana road ■hunted here, but all efforts have failed. o'Grady'h fence.—The fence between Mr O'Grady'a land and the county paddock at Waihou is now beln* erected. Te Kawana road.— Metalling baa been delayed. I have shifted the bridge at the east end of the road from the side to the centre of. the formation. bridge over the Pitko river near Morrinsville, on the main road, and find that the structure if in fair condition. The repairing of hand raila ii necessary and w'll cost about £lO. The approaches are being attended to.

LOAN FOR EASTPORT ROAD.

Mr J. D. Mackay waited on the council and asked that a loan be raised sufficient to metal the remaining portion of Eastport road. The following names were handed in, showing those who were willing that the council shoqld raise a loan for the purpose of doing the work:—J. D. Mackay. Jan. Miller A. A. Wagitaff. D. Barlow, G. W. Horn, H. Magill. J. R. Readhead, C. H. Wood. R. Sproul. J. Rea. R. Dixon. M. Nicol and H. L. Moore.

Mr Mackay said that owing to the establishment of a cheese factory the traffic would be very considerable during the next season. It was agreed to take steps to raise a lean as requested.

DEPUTATION

Mr Gyde waited upon the council to ascertain if the council would grade and metal the road in front of the cheese fact 'ry at Tatua. It was agreed, on the motion of Crs Walters and Smith, that the request be acceded to. TENDERS.

The following tenders were dealt with:—

No. 139—Formation of footpath »t Herriesville, Te Aroha. No tender accepted. No. 142—Formation of No. 4 road, weßt. P. Baine £330 17b (accepted). No. 143—Formation on Manbire's road, off No. 4 road. Left to the engineer.
