SCAFFOLDING PROSECUTION
HAMILTON CONTRACTOR FINED.
The erection of ;i scaffolding over 16ft high at the new laundry building, at the Waikato Hospital, without notification having been given to the Inspector, was the cause of the appearance before .Mr K. liawson, S.M., at Hamilton to-day, of W. Bourne, plasterer, and Messrs Clarke and .Moore, contractors. Bourne said he was sub-contractor lor the plastering work and had no hand in the erection of the scaffold, which was put up hy Clark and .Moore. Under the circumstances, Inspector H. Gresham withdrew the charge against Bourne, though he said that one of the hitter's workmen told him that Bonnie had put up the scaffold. Clark said he understood that Mr MeConnack, Inspector of Factories, also filled the office of scaffolding inspector, and as McCormack had been on the work on several occasions, defendant thought the inspector accepted the scaffolding as having been properly constructed. His Worship remarked that the practice of erecting scaffolding without having it declared safe by the inspector might result, should a fatal accident occur, in the person responsible being arraigned for manslaughter. A fine of £1 was inflicted, with £1 18s costs.
