TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

POSITION OF THE DAIRYING INDUSTRY.

In view of threatened difficulties in regard to cold storage in the new season, action has been taken by Auckland dairy companies by the setting up of a special committee to take steps to avert the threatened trouble. The committee has discussed with the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company a proposal that the company should extend the cold storage at its Auckland works, and the company, in reply, has made the suggestion that the daily companies shall underwrite the cost of the extension by subscribng for shares in the Freezing Company. The terms of this proposal have been circulated throughout the province, with a recommendation by the committee that they should be accepted. The committee has also invited the • hairman of the Thames Valley Co-operative Dairy Company (Mr Hubbard) to join with H. E. Pacey (chairman of the Auckland committee) in making representations with regard ■ 0 transport facilities. As a result of an interview with the Prime Minister, representatives of the dairying industry have learned that the Government expects that by the end of September all the cheese now in store and some of the new season's butter will have been removed ; but, in the opinion of the chairman of the Auckland committee, the congestion at the end of September, when the dairying season will be in full swing, will be even worse than at present. Hence the necessity for the extension of storage accommodation.
