TRIBUTE TO GALLANTRY.
LETTER FROM GENERAL SIR A
J. GODLEY
AN HONOUR TO COMMAND THEM
Received June 24, 9.45 a.m. MELBOURNE, June 24
Mr Pearce quoted extracts from a personal letter from General A. J. Godley, dated May 7th, paying a tribute to the gallantry of the Fourth Brigade and the Otago Battalion, adding: "I am afraid it will be impossible to send accurate casualty lists for some time, so spread is the Companies and even battalions had to be pitched into the fiyht immediately wherever they were wanted, with the result that the men got very intermingled, and at present it is impossible to tell what proportion of our brave fellows reported missing have been killed." He concludes by praising the splendid spirit of the men who come out of the trenches exhausted, hungry and harassed, but twelve hours later go back as fresh as ever. I can never say," he concludes, "how proud I am to have such an excellent and splendidly gallant body of men under me as 1 have the honour to command."
