A CAMBRIDGE PROTEST
By Telegraph.—Special to Times. CAMBRIDGE, Saturday
, At last night's meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council the Mayor, Mr M. "Wells, when speaking of the furnishing of the hospital ship, spoke in no measured terms of the way in which many of the well-to-do people were shirking their duty by not giving anything to the fund. He said since the war commenced he had had much to do with the various funds connected therewith, and he was astounded to see that it was practically the same people who made donations to all of them. This lie found was the ease in Auckland as well as in the Waikato, and he believed there were many more who shirked their financial responsibility than others did enlisting, and some means should be devised to make them give of thenwealth. He then moved: ''While working whole-heartedly on the lines suggested by His Excellency the Governor, we are of opinion that the Government should have undertaken the task of equipping the hospital ship out of the public revenue, instead of leaving it to the generosity of the public, whereby the contributions were made absolutely at variance with the democratic principles of the people. We feel that a tax over the whole community, according to each individual's resources, is the only fair and equitable basis. At present many well-to-do people fail to contribute a single farthing, and the* present procedifre. merely encourages financial shirkers."
The motion was duly seconded and agreed to nem. con.
