FAILURE TO PAY FINES

A further batch of passive resistors appeared before Mr F. O'B. Loughnan, S.M., this morning. Gerald Casey was fined £2 and costs for non-attendance at parades, defendant stating that he could not find the time.

Andrew Casey, who failed to appear, was charged with failing to attend nine parades, was convicted on all charges and fined in all £4 and 14s costs. Sydney Beaven was charged with failing to pay a fine of 10s for failing to obey orders given him by his commanding officer. Accused pleaded guilty, and said the tine was imposed because he was a couple of minutes late. Lieut. Northcroft said Beaven had been persistently late, and on this particular occasion did not appear on parade until half an hour after the parade had commenced.

A fine of 10s was imposed, with 7s costs, to be reduced to Is if the military fine is paid by December 6. William John Harris pleaded that he was sick and therefore could not be present at two of the three parades with which he was charged with failing to attend, while he di not think it was compulsory to attend the third. Questioned by His Worship, he said he went to work during the time he bad influenza.

A fine of 10s was imposed on each charge, with 7s costs.

Charies Urwin, described by , Lieut. Northcroft as a nuisance in the Battery, by whose conduct it was difficult to maintain discipline, was charged with failing to pay a number of fines, and with absenting himself from and being late for parades. Accused pleaded guilty on all the charges, and was convicted and fined £2 and 7s costs, His Worship remarking that Urwin seemed to have no idea of discipline, which must therefore be taught him. Walter Patterson, charged with failing to attend a parade, presented a medical certificate, and was ordered to pay 7s costs.

His Worship told defendant there were certain rules and regulations which territorials mjst make themselves familiar with. Therefore if they wished to obtain leave of absence there was a proper way to go about it. Sydney Jamieson was ordered to pay costs 7s for non-attendance at a parade, Lieut. Northcroft telling His Worship that Jamieson's employers were, from what he understood, responsible, but he had not sufficient evidence to show that they were actually culpable. Reginald Fury, whom Lieut. Northcroft described as an enthusiast when present, but who was very spasmodic in his attendances, was fined os and 7s costs. Fury's excuse was that he was away on one occasion, and at work on the others. Harry Clark, who was said to be an erratic attender, was fined 10s 4nd 7s costs for non-attendance. James Lowe Smith was convicted and fined 10s and 7s costs on one charge of non-attendance, and discharged upon another. (
