It is reported that Salar ed Dowleh (brother of the ex-Shah of Persia, and leader of the revolt in his favor) is rapidly approaching Teheran. CANADA'S NAVY. OTTAWA, October 18. The resignation of Mr F. D. Monk (Minister for Works) is reported to be imminent as a result of Mr Borden's naval policy. He demands that Canada's emergency contribution of five millions to the Imperial navy shall first be submitted to a plebiscite.

Circulars have been issued urging the withdrawal of the deposits in the sixPower group of banks, as a protest against their attitude towards the Crisp loan. A Bill has been drafted which will produce an additional 15,000,000 taels of salt taxation.

RUBBER FRAUDS

SYDNEY, October 19

In the Papuan rubber frauds case defendants were committed for trial on a charge of conspiracy to falsify the prospectus and balance-sheet.

Joseph Cox and John George Aikman (directors of the Papuan Rubber and Trading Company) were charged with falsifying the balance-sheet by omitting therefiom an item of £350 which they knew to have been stolen. Counsel for the prosecution, in opening the case, stated that Cox visited the company's properties and- prepared a strongly adverse report. This was not presented ; instead, the directors issued a garbled and misleading report; also, the secretary of the company, now undergoing sentence, before the meeting confessed to Cox and Aikman that he had defrauded the company of the amount named in the charge, besides other defalcations totalling £I6OO or £I7OO ; yet the directors moved the adoption of the report without saying a word of the secretary's defalcations.

TINNED MEAT FOR THE ARMY

Sir George Reid has cabled that the Indian Army Intelligence Department is complaining of the shortage of Australian tinned meats for the troops, and states that it will soon be necssary to apply to foreigners if supplies are unavailable from Australia.

STATE HOTELS BILL. Received October 21, 9.45 a.m. PERTH, October 21. The Council by 13 to 8 resolved to read six months hence the State Hotels Bill, whereby the Budget anticipated a revenue of £53,000.
