CHEAP MEAT DEMANDED
CROWD FIRED ON

(Received Sept. 18, 9.20 p.m.) VIENNA, Sept. 18. A Socialist demonstration, as a protest against dear food, 'when 50,000 people marched to Rathaus, violent speeches were delivered demanding the importation of foreign meat a nd the reduction' of the cost of living, culminated in rioting. Innumerable windows were smashed, including the Law Courts, and the tramcars were wrecked. The police and scldiery were stoned and barricades were erected. Furniture' from restaurants and schools was piled in the streets and set on fire. Dragoons charged and dispersed the crowd. Towards evening thei rioting was 1 enewed in the workmen s quarter in the Ottakring district. The troops fired, killing, three, wound-in; four severely and eighty slightly. One hundred and seventy rioters were arrested.

The Cherbourg and other municipalities are buying provisions and reselling them, despite the pecuniaty Icgs, at the market prices of an ordinary year.
At Lille municipal stores have been opened and also a restaurant, at which meals are sold a*t cost price, without charging fcr the expenses of management.
