DOMINION OPINION.

♦ We are thankful that Sir Joseph Ward does not promise every ■ Crown tenant the freehold on such terms as the Panrfrs' Union and the Opposition can approve, or, indeed, on any terms. But we regret that his defence of the public interests is enfeebled toy the absence of any positive faith or any constructive policy. The matter must some day jbe faced', but having successfully fenced with it for thteet years, the Government naturally thinks that a few more weeks will not make much difference. It must, however, be a matter of weeks and not months, for something decisive must surely be done before the electors are called upon/to pronounoe judgment. In the meantime the Government is doing its best to shew that it .has not forgotten the farmers—Wellington Post.

We confess that we. never thought it probable that those civilised Powers could deliberately determine to go to war about a matter of such trifling! importance. The only danger to peace lay in the "mailed fist" method of the German -Government which is not the sort of affront that a higth. spirited people can 'be expected to submit to calmy. That Prance has not taken offence, that she has shown a reasonable, desire, to meet Germany's views is much to her credit.—Ha wke's Bay Herald.
