RUSSIAN SITUATION.

CHIEF MILITARY PROSECUTOR SHOT. THE ASSASSIN SHOT. LONDON, January The already enormous list of high Russian officials who have fallen at the hands of the assassin was further increased to-day. A man, disguised in the uniform of a private in the Army Service Corps, gained admission to the official residence of General Pavloff (Chief Military Public Prosecutor), on the pretext of public business. The General entered the courtyard in the front ot' his residence, when the supposed soldier, walking quietly towards him, suddenly drew a revolver. and, at very short range, fired three shots. All the bullets took effect, and it was at once seen that the General was mortally wounded, death superveuing in a few moments. The assassin coolly re-loaded his revolver, and when a gendarme rushed up to arrest him, tired at him point blank, killing him on the spot. He then attempted to escape from the courtyard, and wounded a second gendarme and many other who intercepted him, but none were very seriously injured, and the assassin was eventually arrested. General Pavloff took a le.'ding part in the institution of the system of trial by drum-head court-martial, which has caused so much bitter dissatisfaction and discontent,, and his assassination is supposed to be due to the part he took in the matter. The frequency of assassinations has caused the bureaucrats to become panic-stricken.
