FOUNDERED AT SEA

OFF THREE KINGS.' CREW SAFELY ASHORE.

AUCKLAND, this day. The Norwegian-built barquentine Everland, coal laden, foundered and became a total loss near the Three Kings on Saturday last, while on a voyage from Newcasle to Auckland, with a cargo of coal. No lives were lost. It was discovered that mortk ing that the vessel was leaking 80 seriously that there was no hope of her remaining afloat, the two life boats were provisioned, and the crew of twelve members, under Captain Savory, were placed in them. The captain's boat was headed for ttti / mainland for assistance, while t&V first mate's crew landed on the Three Kings, a safe landing being effected with some difficulty on the lee side of the Big King. Captain Savory's boat made the risky voyage to the mainland in safety, and Pukeuui, a small township in the Far North, was reached at 're o'clock yesterday morning, all la Jing safely, and being well looked after by the inhabitants.

Captain Savory has been master of a large number of vessels trading on the coast of New Zealand and across to Australia, and is well-known as an exceedingly careful and capable P navigator. „• Later accounts show that IfgMg vessel had been becalmed for hours between the Big King and / Cape Maria van Diemen. During this time the vessel was drifting ashore, and was in such imminent danger of being wrecked that tho crew had to get out the boats aid commence to tow her clear of the land.

In this they were successful, but the Everland, after three hours' towing, had been moved into deep water and apparent safety, it was found that she had sprung a leak. There was no hope for the ' ship when this fresh danger was dig* covered, the leaking being very extensive. Soon after the leak was reported, the Everland foundered in deep water.

The six men on the Big King have ample provisions for eight dayß, and the steamer Apanui will at once leave Pukenui to rescue them.
