On Boxing Day there was tne aaual hack race meeting on the Kuapuke beach. There was a good attendance of people from the neighbouring districts, and some excellent sport was provided. The principal event, the Cup, fel to Mr C. Swann'e iiiuah, and the same owner's Shamrock annexed one of the pony raoes. Mr D. MoUrackea won
a couple ot races with Mahuta and Tasinan; Mr K. J. Nicholson scored a double win with Nell; Miss Ward and Mr J. Phillips one race each with Monday and Bangipai, respectively; and Mr W. Thornsou got home first in tne trot with Nimrod.
On New \ ear's Day the annual regatta and sports at Kaglan attracted a very large gathering. It kept fine till well on in the atternoon, wlwn the rain necessitated leaving out one or two of the concluding events ot the programme. The handicapping and starting were in the hands of Mr " lius" Norton, who succeeded in bo guaging the capabilities of the performers that some exciting finishes resulted. Messrs A. it Laugley, VV. J. Smith and a! itusbrick officiated as judges, and Mr J. Darrow made a thoroughly efficient secretary. Greasy Boom.— 0, Auseli 1. Raglan Cup Handicap.— oleorge Charieton 1, J. Pegler 2. A meeting of inembars of the A. and P. Association was held on New Year's Day, seventeen being preaeut. The report of the special committee which had been appointed to undertake the erect on of sbowyards at Kauroa, where it had been deoided to hold the stook shows in future, proved that it was a hopeless case to try to raise the cost of ereoting the yards by public subscription. With very few exceptions those present favoured continuing the show at Hag.au, and notioe was given of a motion to rescind the resolutions on the minutes referring to the removal of the show to Kauroa. This will be dealt with at a meeting to be held on 12th inst, and it is tolurably certain that it will then bo decided to hold this year's stock show at least in the existing yard? at liaglan. Mr Collins, carter, broke the small bone of his left leg through slipping on the rails of the wharf last Saturday, and will be laid up for some time as a consequence.
A man named George Clarkj who has been working at the Te Ao-te-rei fkxmill (Te Akau) is reported to be missing. He bad been imbibing too freely at the mill on Saturday night, showing an inclination to make away with himself. It is supposed that he has become mentally deranged, and has wondered away. There was very little business of interest transacted at the Raglan Town Board meeting on Saturday last. Mr J. N, Peg!er. J.P., waited on the Board and suggested that.it should itself to bring about the expenditure of the sum appearing on the Estimates for the erect ion of a courthouse and Police Station at Raglan. The present court housu is in a very delapidated state, absolutely beyond repair, and the Board decided to approach the Minister of Public Works, through the member for the district, with a view to securing the expenditure of the Government grant. It was also resolved to remind the Crown Lands Commissioner of his promise to send an officer of the Department to make a standard survey of the township. A good deal of rain has fallen, and the weather is hot and muggy. The potato blight has put in an appearance-it is just the weather for it,
