♦ STEAMSHIP COMPANIES' LOSSES. MAIL CONTRACTS. LONDON, December 13. At a meeting of the P. and 0. Steam Navigation Company, the Chairman (Sir Thomas Sutherland) stated that the mail companies had lost between £90,000 and £IOO,UOU ou butter freights alone. With regard to the new Federal mail contract, the Chairman said that this was not the first time in the history of Australia that au outsider had rushed into a mail contract, which an experienced company like the Peninsular and Oriental had declined, and history had recorded in the result a serious disaster.
