THE GOVERNMENT AND THE FARMER.
SPEECH BY THE PREMIER. (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This day, v The new bridge at Awahou was opened by the Premier yesterday, In the course of bis speech Sir Joseph Ward suid the pioneers who are getting out in the backblocks deserve every con» sideration at the hands of the Government, but he pointed out thai the Government was now spending at the rate of million a year on public works, such as roads, railways and public buildings. They were borrowing a million a year for public works, and if they asked for more they might make the position of the country financially, anything but pleasant. He and his colleagues, and in fact, every member of Parliament were anxious to do all they could to help the settlers, and he advised thntn if anyone should say that the Government was not auxious to help the farmers, or they would do anything to hurt farmers, or that its policy would be inmical to the best interests of farmers, to accept his statement that this was entirely contrary to the wishes and aspirations of members of the Ministry, aud he for one would not be a parly to anything of the »* kind.
