The annual race meeting of the Ngaruawahia Racing Club was held yesterday in beautiful weather, consequently a very large number of visitors were present on the course, a large number coming by the special train run from Auckland. The racing could by no means be called exciting, as in cnly three events were there over that, number of starters. Still a very pleasant outing w»s provided, the only regrettable incident being in the first race, when the riders of Ster.ney tnd Geologist began fighting with their whips at the back of the course, for which they received a caution from the stewards. Mr S. Williams managed to pull 1 tT a double, the Publican s Purse and the Hack Race, besides a second in the Wains;aro Handicap with the aged br mare Lunetta, by Saracen-Luna. Stepney and (Geologist appropriated a first and a second each, the former the Hurdles and the Publican's Purse respectively, and the latter the Waingaro Handicap and the Hurdles. In the Purse, however, there were only the two starters. Buchanan rode three fusts. The usual contingent of bookmakers laid the odds. Mr Hallett, of the Ngiruawahia Hotel, ran the publican's and refreshment booths, and did good business at both.
The arrangements were most complete and the programme was finished well up to time, a most desirable thing in thesa affairs. For this the secretary (Mr E. Rathborne) and the starter (Mr H. Booth) were responsible, though the latter in some events did betray a perhaps undue conscientiousness in the fulfilment of his duties. The judge (Mr A. H. Waring) gave every satisfaction.
