A FARMERS' PROTEST. (Bv Telegraph.—Press Association). AUCKLAND, this day. 2At a meeting of the members of tha ■ Fanners' Union, the president deliver* ed_an address, adversely criticising the Land Bill. The following motion was carried unanimously: " After reading the published report of the speech at Onehunga by the Miuister ol Lands, this meeting of farmers records an emphatic protest agaiust. the provisions of the Land Bill, which makes it impossible for any future settlers on Crown Lands to acquire the freehold of their holdings. It considers that a lease without option to purchase will be unsatisfactory to settlers and detrimental to the best interests of the State, as tending to discourage settlement. a The Minister for Lands addressed a meeting at Otahuhu when a vote of thanks to the Minister and confidence in the Government was carried. An amendment in favour of optional system of tenure was negatived.
