BOROUGH COUNCIL.

lip ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held last evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. S. Bond) and Crs. W. F. Ma?on, C. L. MacDiarinid, C. J. W. Buton, <*. Edgetutnbe, J. A. Young and \V. ('. Davis.

He wou'd move that the reference to tr-idesineu's carts not plying for hire, be struck out. Trie Mayor suggested that Cr. Young should withhold his amendment until ibe adoption came up for confirmation. Id the meantime copies of the by-laws would bo circulated, and Councillors would bi able to study them fully. Cr. Young agreed to this course, and after some further discussion the motion

W'ss carried. The speoial order striking a special rate confirmed on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Bartorj. The ordinary business was then taken.

Cr. Brewis wrote applying for leave of abience for six months. The applicarion was granted. Mr W. H. Paul, secretary of the Waikato >oglers' Club, wrote asking for payment of the Council's donation of £5 towards the cost of fish ponds. The amount was passed lor payment. Messrs Ltvett and Tucker wrote applying for the uj.l of poriion of section 417 in th< vicinity of the old sunken vessel at the mouth of the creek, on the eastern bank of the river, as a gravel pit. The section was at present in a very bad state, and if their application w .s granted they would undert«ke to fence and otherwise improve it cnsiderably, leaving it to the approval of the Engineer, suitable for recreation purposes.

The Engineer recommended that thr application be granted on the condition? mentioned, and on the distinct understanding that the gravel taken be used only on the Borough streets. After some discussion the Mayor moved that the application be granted on the on ditions named, and on the further conditions that sixpence per load royalty be paid on each load of gravel t»ken from the pit. Or. MacDiarmid seconded the motion, which was carried. Messrs Ellis and Burnand Ltd wrote asking that a larger water main be installed in Grey-street, to enable them to provide their premises with adequate fire prevention apparatus. Cr. Barton moved that the work asked for be carried out. The motion was seconded by Cr. Young and carried. The Borough Solicitor forwarded plan of Von Teinpsky-street, with the necessary consents endorsed thereon. The Mayor and Cr. Mason were appointed to affix the Bjrough 6eal to the plan.

Mr H. J. Greenslade M.H.H. forwarded a letter from the Hon the Minister for Eailways, with reference to the Council':

application that cattle yards be provided at the station, ibe request made was for the provision ot a aiding a-.d cattle yards on tho platform side of the station, the oost of which would be considerable. Apart from that there were very decided objections to yards in such a

p isition. There were already yards a' Frankton and Kirikiriroa and he regretted that he Could not see his way to compl) Mth the Borough's request. The letter was received.

The Mayor reported that ho had brought the matter bjfore the Hon. H. McNao on Thursday, and he had promised to lay it again before the Minister of Railways. ihe Hon. J. MoGowan, Minister of Justice, telegraphed regretting his inability to visit Hamilton on the 28th ult. to open the new Courthouse. It might be possible tor him to visit Hamilton later on for that purpose.

It was decided to invite the Minister of Public Works to open the saleyards. The Departmuut of Roads wrot-s, forwarding a copy of the Model By-laws Bill. —HeCbived.

Messrs Rigby & Warren, architects, submitted sketch plans for the proposed alterations to the Town Hall. The matter was referred to the Town lIjII Committee to report. Tne S-cietary of the Fire Brigade wrote

Water Extension. —With reference to the applications for the extension of the water service in Jersey and Ulster-streets, the loan pr- poaal provided for 23 chains of tin mains in Jersey-street and -10 chains in Ulster-street, but owing to the number of new h'-u-oj erected in Jcr-ey-streetan additional ') chains will be required. As the loan is now available, I eee no reason why tenders should not lie invited for the supply ot tne necessary pipes, valvei and hydrants. The total cost including laying will be about -£OSO.
